Bernard heard stories of his Grandfather’s travels in a Magic Barrel which was said to be in his Grandfather’s workshop.
One day whilst exploring in the dusty workshop he was startled by a deep voice exclaiming “Who are you, what are you doing in here?” To his surprise Bernard had found his Grandfather’s old friend Benny the Magic Barrel. Benny could turn himself into a human-like figure with a face, arms and legs and had two windows and a door in his barrel shaped belly. So began the many adventures into Toby World.
Throughout the stories Bernard and Benny meet various Toby characters, all colourfull, all different, many musical. Toby Duke was an important figure in the new exciting world, he was always there to lead the way. He dressed in a blue jacket and hat with red trousers and high black boots. He was always happy to see his new friends. Valerina, one of the violinists, was the first to meet Bernard and Benny. She had startlingly blue eyes, a lovely smile and was well known for the lovely music she played.
The Toby characters are many and varied. They travel around Toby World making music, and having exciting adventures which they share with Benny and Bernard.
